Manufacturing Discipline Matters

When considering which module manufacturer can deliver for particular projects, pay attention to their manufacturing discipline — it matters.

For developers, EPCs, distributors and asset owners, manufacturing discipline directly affects product consistency, installation and long-term asset performance and creates the documentation needed to verify how and when modules were produced, trace materials and address quality or compliance questions quickly. That helps ensure the module evaluated during qualification is the same module that arrives at the project site — shipment after shipment.

Discipline Equals Quality Output

A disciplined manufacturing operation builds quality into every stage of production, from incoming material inspection and equipment calibration to process controls, in-line testing and final product review.

These systems are designed to identify variation before it becomes a larger issue. They help manufacturers verify materials, monitor critical production parameters and maintain detailed records throughout the manufacturing process. Final inspection still plays an important role, but it should be the last layer of protection — not the first time a manufacturer looks for a problem.

For customers, an established quality management system reduces the likelihood of receiving products that vary significantly from one production run to the next and provides greater visibility when questions do arise, allowing the manufacturer to trace components, production conditions and test results back to a particular module or batch.

The bifacial Mono PERC module, manufactured at Bila Solar’s Indianapolis facility, earned recognition in six testing categories: thermal cycling, damp heat, mechanical stress sequence, potential-induced degradation, light-induced degradation and light- and elevated temperature-induced degradation.

To receive Top Performer recognition in those categories, modules must meet Kiwa PVEL’s defined criteria, including degradation thresholds, wet leakage requirements and visual inspection standards. Select tests also include bypass diode testing.

Independent testing does not replace disciplined manufacturing; however, the two must work together.

Third-party testing evaluates a product’s design, durability and performance under demanding conditions. Factory quality assurance systems determine whether the modules produced at commercial scale remain consistent with the product that was independently tested.

Look Beyond the Spec Sheet

Solar buyers should evaluate manufacturers with the same level of rigor they apply to module specifications and project economics.

That means asking questions such as:

  • What quality management systems govern the factory?
  • How are incoming materials inspected and approved?
  • Which production parameters are monitored and documented?
  • How does the manufacturer manage product, material or process changes?
  • Can modules and components be traced to specific production records?
  • What independent reliability testing has been completed?
  • How are nonconformances investigated and corrected?
  • Does the manufacturer have the technical and quality personnel needed to support customers after delivery?

These questions reveal whether a supplier is simply capable of manufacturing modules or capable of producing them consistently at commercial scale.

The solar industry has no shortage of product claims, capacity announcements and future commitments. The more meaningful differentiator is execution: maintaining disciplined quality systems, producing consistently, validating performance independently and supporting customers with clear documentation and accountability.
